University of Michigan Press partners with CDC and BiblioVault to sell e-books

The University of Michigan Press will make 500 e-books available for sale on its website through a partnership with BiblioVault and the Chicago Distribution Center. Customers can now immediately download UMP's e-books using Adobe's free Digital Editions software for PC, Mac and e-reader devices.

"This landmark achievement makes us a full player in the world of digital books," said Press Director Phil Pochoda. "Coupled with the sale of our digital files through a wide array of digital wholesalers and retailers, and through public and private libraries, this important collaboration with BiblioVault signifies that our digital program is at the cutting edge of the university press world." The Press plans to continue adding e-book titles in the coming months, with the goal of providing almost its entire backlist in electronic format for digital distribution around the world.

UMP's digital editions are powered by BiblioVault, which offers file conversion, delivery and metadata services for scholarly presses. To make digital editions available directly on its website, UMP is using a shopping cart solution developed by the Chicago Distribution Center. The cart connects UMP's website to BiblioVault's real-time fulfillment capabilities. The CDC began offering its enhanced shopping cart to its partner presses last year. Michigan, which does not use the CDC's distribution services, becomes one of the first non-CDC presses to use the cart.

"We were able to easily integrate the CDC's digital shopping cart into our website," Pochoda said. "It is exactly the e-book sales solution we had been looking for, and we couldn't find it anywhere else."

CDC is making the cart available to any press that uses BiblioVault's delivery services.

"We're very pleased to be able to offer our digital shopping cart to presses outside the CDC family," said Garrett Kiely, director of the University of Chicago Press, which operates BiblioVault and the CDC. "The digital shopping cart and BiblioVault's fulfillment capabilities offer an easy and affordable way for publishers to add e-books to their online stores."

The University of Chicago Press began using the cart to offer e-books directly from its website last July, and now offers more than 1,000 titles for 30-, 180-day and perpetual access.
